RESUMO

PURPOSE: The current study reports preliminary findings from a pilot sample that sought to compare the emotional responses of older adults toward death in Egyptian and Spanish cultures. METHOD: A cohort of 90 eligible older adults from Egypt and Spain were recruited using a cross-sectional descriptive design. RESULTS: Egyptian participants recorded a significantly higher score in approaching acceptance of death compared to their Spanish counterparts (mean = 21.57, SD = 9.4 and mean = 13.51, SD = 7.11, respectively). Post-hoc test showed there were differences in levels of valence (F[1,86] = 23.88, p < 0.001), indicating that older adults in Spain perceived such images as more unpleasant compared to Egyptian older adults. A significant difference related to death attitude profile scale was noted between Egyptian and Spanish older adults. CONCLUSION: Egyptian and Spanish older adults demonstrated different attitudes toward death in addition to differences in death anxiety and depression. This preliminary study validates the importance of developing effective nursing strategies to lessen anxiety and fear about death. [Research in Gerontological Nursing, xx(x), xx-xx.].

RESUMO

AIMS/BACKGROUND: Assessing the intensity of perinatal grief is very important for identifying the more complex cases in mothers and fathers. Despite this, there are few assessment tools available. The aim of this study was to analyse the psychometric properties (factorial structure, reliability, and validity) of the Spanish version of the Perinatal Grief Intensity Scale (PGIS). DESIGN/METHODS: An online survey was completed by 291 mothers and fathers who had suffered perinatal loss in the previous six years. RESULTS: The results showed adequate fit indexes for the three-factor model of the PGIS: reality, confront others, and congruence. Reliability values for the overall scale and subscales were adequate. Finally, with regard to validity, significant (p < .05) and positive relationships were found with levels of complicated grief, event centrality, guilt, anxiety, and depression. There were also differences depending on whether participants exhibited high or low levels of complicated grief, and on the number of weeks of pregnancy at the time of the loss. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the Spanish adaptation of the PGIS has adequate reliability and validity scores and a factorial structure consistent with the original version.

RESUMO

The death of a baby in the perinatal period is considered a disenfranchized grief that can be a source of significant symptoms of guilt, shame, and stigma. There is a lack of validated instruments for assessing the stigma associated with perinatal grief. The aim of this study was to examine the psychometric properties (factor structure, reliability, and validity) of the Spanish version of the Stillbirth Stigma Scale (SSS) in parents who have experienced a perinatal loss. A total of 291 participants (mostly mothers) completed an online questionnaire that included the SSS and other measures. The best-fitting factor structure was a second-order model with four dimensions and adequate reliability values. In terms of validity, we found statistically significant relationships between the SSS scores and the variables of self-esteem, complicated grief, event centrality, depression, and anxiety. In conclusion, the Spanish adaptation of the SSS is deemed to have adequate psychometric properties.

RESUMO

Experience of grief has increased among people with intellectual disability because of their longer life expectancy. Professionals supporting this population are often critical of the lack of adequate tools for dealing with this situation. The objective of this study was to identify the strategies and barriers that these professionals are confronted with when dealing people with intellectual disability who are going through the grieving process. A qualitative study was conducted involving 20 professionals working with people with intellectual disability. Four themes were extracted using thematic analysis: Exclusion of clients from end-of-life and grief processes, Strategies to support the client's grief process, Emotional and personal difficulties faced by the professionals, and Coping and regulation of the professional's grief process. Barriers identified by these professionals include not having the specific skills to support clients in their grief and the emotional impact of the death of a client.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To the best of our knowledge, no studies have yet examined the emotional repercussions of the care processes among people infected with the human immunodeficiency virus who participate in preventive anal cancer screening programs. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the knowledge, emotions, sexuality, barriers, and facilitators perceived by this patient group during the process of anal cancer screening and diagnosis. METHODS: Detailed, semistructured, qualitative interviews were completed with 17 men and 3 women to explore their knowledge, experiences, and emotions regarding the screening process. Purposive sampling was conducted on the basis of age, gender, and type of lesion diagnosed in the anal biopsy. RESULTS: Four major themes were identified: 1) knowledge of the disease and its treatment, 2) emotions perceived by the patients, 3) the influence of screening on sexual practices, and 4) facilitators and obstacles during the care provision process. Patients reported appropriate knowledge of anal cancer and human papillomavirus. Predominant emotions were worry and fear with avoidance as one of the coping strategies. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that communication of information and clinical results can be improved. IMPLICATION FOR PRACTICE: Understanding the facilitators and barriers to the program will allow the integration of interventions designed to improve healthcare provision into direct care.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Motivation is a central concept in self-determination theory (SDT). The Treatment Self-Regulation Questionnaire (TSRQ), which assesses motivation (autonomous, controlled, etc.), has been widely used. However, less is known about its applicability to samples such as college students, who may be at risk of having unhealthy behavior in many areas (including smoking, poor dietary habits, alcohol, or tobacco consumption). As this population is transitioning to adulthood, research is needed to understand motivation and changing health patterns. In addition, the lack of instruments for this population in Spain has made the measurement validation process a priority. The purpose of this psychometric study was to adapt the TSRQ to Spanish college students and to examine its structural and validity across four health domains. METHODS: Two samples of Spanish college students (n = 347 and n = 244) agreed to participate in the study. Participants completed a booklet containing measures of motivation, well-being, general health, anxiety, depression, and lifestyle. RESULTS: CFA supported a five-dimensional structure in each domain. Reliability values were also adequate for each questionnaire. Regarding other sources of validity, statistically significant relationships between self-determination, health, and well-being were clearly confirmed, and autonomy was a significant predictor of lifestyle. CONCLUSIONS: The Spanish version of the TSRQ showed adequate psychometric properties (dimensionality and internal structure, reliability, and validity evidence regarding its relationships with other constructs) in college students. The Spanish TSRQ will provide future research aimed to understand the motivational role in college students' health behavior and well-being.

RESUMO

The management of hospitalized patients with dementia is more complicated compared to patients without dementia, specifically in the surgery ward. The aim of the current study was to explore the experiences of operating room health care providers in the management of patients with dementia. A descriptive qualitative study was designed. Twenty semi-structured interviews were conducted with surgical professionals. Content analysis was performed. Four main themes emerged: Communication Issues, Experience-Based Protocol, Emotions, and Perceived Needs. Health care providers in a surgical ward face numerous challenges when attending to patients with dementia and tend to use strategies based on their own experience due to lack of specific action protocols. Therefore, specific training of the surgical team and protocols are needed to ensure quality care. [Research in Gerontological Nursing, 16(3), 125-133.].

Symptoms of fatigue and lack of energy are very common in caregivers of palliative care (PC) patients, traditionally associated with variables such as burden or depression. There are no Spanish-language instruments validated for assessing fatigue levels in this population. The Fatigue Assessment Scale (FAS) is a useful and simple instrument for assessing fatigue in this group. The aim of this study was to examine its psychometric properties (factor structure, reliability and validity) in a sample of caregivers of PC patients. Instrumental design for instrument validation was performed. One hundred and eight caregivers of PC patients participated and completed measures of fatigue, family functioning, life satisfaction, caregiver burden, anxiety, depression, resilience and quality of life. A confirmatory factor analysis was performed; non-linear reliability coefficient and Pearson correlations and t-tests were conducted to assess evidence of reliability and validity. The Spanish version of the FAS was found to have a one-dimensional structure. Reliability was 0.88. Validity evidence showed that FAS scores were positively associated with levels of burden, anxiety and depression. They were negatively associated with family functioning, life satisfaction, resilience and quality of life. The Spanish version of the FAS in caregivers of PC patients shows adequate psychometric properties.

RESUMO

Study of the neurodevelopment of children is vital to promote good quality of life during childhood. Few batteries showing adequate reliability and validity indices are available to evaluate the different neuropsychological domains. The objective of this study was to obtain initial evidence on the validity of the Computerized Battery for Neuropsychological Evaluation of Children (BENCI) in a Spanish population. To assess the validity of the BENCI battery and other measures of task switching, abstract reasoning, linguistic abilities, processing speed, and attention were used. The sample was composed of a total of 73 children aged 9, 10, and 11 years. Significant differences among age groups were observed in the domains of sustained attention, memory, and executive function. In addition, the BENCI subtests showed statistically significant correlations with the other neuropsychological tools. Further research is warranted on the relationship of the BENCI with other tests in wider age groups and to assess the factorial structure of the scale and the reliability values of the subtests. In conclusion, this study seems to indicate that the Spanish version of the BENCI has promising validity to be used for evaluating the main neuropsychological domains in children.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: There are multiple variables that influence fear of death, as well as attitudes towards it, including age, religiosity, emotional and cultural aspects. Due to the proximity to death, the study of attitudes and death-related anxiety and the variables that influence it in the elderly population is of great relevance. The aim of the present study was to compare the levels of death anxiety, fear of death, attitudes towards death and associated emotional aspects (anxiety and depression) in older adults from 2different cultures, Western and Arab. MATERIALS AND METHOD: A total of 91 people over 60 years old took part and were divided into 2groups, one of people born in Spain (n=46) and the other of people born in Egypt (n=45). In an individualised assessment, participants completed the DAS, PRAM and the anxiety and depression subscales of the SCL-90-R questionnaires. RESULTS: Statistically significant differences between groups were observed in fear of death, acceptance and emotional aspects. Predictors of anxiety and fear of death were different for each group. CONCLUSION: The results show the importance of taking into account cultural, religious and emotional aspects in the evaluation of fear and attitudes towards death in the elderly population.

RESUMO

This study focused on the specific challenges of university students in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic and examined similarities and differences in COVID-related concerns and difficulties in functioning in samples of undergraduate students in five countries. A sample of 4306 undergraduate university students (43.8% males, 56.2% females) from Israel, Kosovo, Ukraine, Cyprus and Germany participated in an anonymous online survey during the first wave of the pandemic, between March and June 2020. Study variables included the assessment of the exposure to COVID-19, perceived health status, specific COVID-related concerns and functional difficulties, social support, and the perceived level of coping. Similar concerns about the uncertainty regarding the termination of the health crisis and worry for the health of family members were identified as the most common concerns in the five countries. Challenges in online learning and financial difficulties were rated as the most central difficulties. Both COVID-related concerns and COVID-related difficulties predicted lower levels of perceived coping. Greater social support was associated with better perceived coping. Policymakers should be informed by the accumulating research showing the substantive relationships between academic difficulties and perceived COVID-related distress and coping.

RESUMO

There is a need to improve psychological interventions in women experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV) and reduce its long-term sequelae. The objective of this qualitative study was to explore the needs of female IPV survivors, the support they receive, and their strategies for coping with this experience over the long term. During 2017, 53 female IPV survivors participated in the study, of whom 38 (71.7%) were recruited from women's associations against gender violence from three Andalusia provinces (Southern Spain). In a semi-structured interview, the women responded to four open-ended questions about the effects of IPV on their life and how they coped with this situation. Four main themes were identified: (1) changes after the experience, (2) support during recovery, (3) perceived needs and obstacles, and (4) current situation. The survivors considered formal and informal social support to be critical to their recovery and emotional well-being. They also highlighted the need for continuity in support programs and for specialist interventions to address long-term psychological sequelae. These findings reinforce the need for psychological programs more tailored to the needs of these women.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Standardised patient simulations seem to be useful for improving the communication skills of health sciences students. However, it is important to define the effectiveness of these types of interventions in complex scenarios linked to disease chronicity and end-of-life contexts. METHODS: A quasi-experimental study with pre- and post-intervention measures was carried out in a single group. A total of 161 nursing students completed different assessment instruments to measure their attitudes towards communication (Attitude Toward Communication Scale), self-efficacy (Self-Efficacy of Communication Skills, SE-12), and communication skills (Health Professionals Communication Skills Scale, EHC-PS) before and after simulation training with standardised patients. The objective of the program was to train students in non-technical skills for complex situations involving chronicity and end-of-life care. It comprised eight sessions lasting 2.5 h each. RESULTS: The results showed notable baseline gender differences in attitudes towards communication and in the informative communication dimension, with women obtaining higher scores. The participants' self-efficacy and communication skills significantly improved after completing the intervention, with no significant differences being found for the attitudes towards communication variable. CONCLUSION: The standardised patient simulation programme for complex scenarios related to chronicity and end-of-life contexts improved communication self-efficacy and communication skills in these nursing students. In future work it will be important to analyse the influence of gender and attitudes towards communication as variables in the learning of communication skills in nursing students.

RESUMO

Neuropsychological studies on refugee children are scarce, but there are even less in the case of Palestinian children. This work aims to study the neuropsychological performance of Palestinian refugee children in Palestine compared to other Palestinian children living outside refugee camps. A comprehensive Neuropsychological battery was administrated to 584 Palestinian school children (464 refugees and 120 non-refugees) aged 6, 7, and 8 years old. Results showed that non-refugee children outperformed refugee children in sustained attention, verbal comprehension, verbal memory, and visual memory. This study is the first to have performed a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment, based on a standardized and validated battery with the Palestinian refugee children. It supports professionals in their evaluation of neurodevelopment and neuropsychological alterations in refugee and non-refugee children in Palestine.

RESUMO

The objectives of the present study were to adapt a grief intervention program to family caregivers of patients with dementia, and assess its effectiveness in improving the symptoms of grief and other health-related variables. The intervention was based on Shear and Bloom's grief intervention program, with the necessary adaptations for use in the grieving process for a family member's illness. A total of 52 family caregivers of individuals with dementia participated. They were evaluated using a battery of self-report measures assessing grief, overload, resilience, post-traumatic growth, experiential avoidance, health-related quality of life, and benefits of care. The results suggest that the program is effective in improving grief symptoms, caregiver burden, resilience, post-traumatic growth, and quality of life of family caregivers. It is necessary to create and implement interventions targeting caregivers' feelings and manifestations of ambiguous grief, because there is a lack of programs providing an efficient solution for the mental and physical health of caregivers, and because of the human and socioeconomic cost involved in neglecting this group.

RESUMO

Recent trends in grief research have been exploring how symptoms of prolonged grief disorder (PGD) and depression co-occur in bereaved individuals using Latent Class Analysis (LCA). However, the PGD criteria have kept undergoing changes and the newest DSM-5 PGD criteria have not been captured in these studies. Also, previous LCA-grief studies have been conducted in Western cultures, focusing more on bereaved adult populations. In this study, we applied LCA on a non-Western sample of bereaved young and middle-aged adults to examine whether the consistently observed 3 latent classes will emerge. We explored if the socio-demographic, loss-related factors, religiousness, spirituality, and continuing bond to the deceased, differentiated the latent classes. We confirmed the 3 latent classes comprising the Resilient class (20.6%), the predominantly PGD class (44.7%), and the combined PGD and Depression class (34.7%). Age, time elapsed since the loss, continuing bond and relationship with the deceased as well as spiritual beliefs were the differential predictors of class membership. This study increases our conceptual and clinical understanding of the predictability of PGD symptomology outcome, according to the newest DSM-5 criteria following bereavement in a non-Western sample. In addition to the continuing bond which was the strongest correlate, attention should be paid to important sociocultural frameworks in grief management.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Training emotionally complex communication skills with standardized patients brings realism to simulation scenarios, and moreover, is associated with high levels of satisfaction among the students. OBJECTIVES: (1) To measure the satisfaction of nursing students and factors related to their satisfaction and (2) to explore the effects perceived by nursing students after having a high-fidelity simulation training program using standardized patients. DESIGN AND PARTICIPANTS: Mixed design. Pre-post quasi-experimental phase in which the Satisfaction Scale Questionnaire with High-Fidelity Clinical Simulation was administered in 156 students; a second, semi-structured interview qualitative phase was completed by 11 students. RESULTS: Nursing students showed high satisfaction scores. The scores for utility and communication were correlated with the students' attitudes towards communication. In the second phase, two main themes and four sub-themes emerged. CONCLUSIONS: Teachers could implement high-fidelity simulation programs with standardized patients for training emotionally complex communication skills to nursing students. These programs allow students to participate in their own learning processes and help them to feel motivated and satisfied about the usefulness of their learning experiences.
